New Hope Initiative is a nonprofit founded from inside the prison system — built by a man serving time who decided the system

We know intervention can make a difference. People who participate in correctional education have better post-release outcomes. In a major meta-analysis, participants had 28% lower odds of recidivating in the highest-quality studies. (Office of Justice Programs)

These aren't just numbers. They represent people, families, victims, communities—and human potential we cannot afford to waste.

If we want fewer future victims and safer communities, we have to do more than punish what happened yesterday. We have to build what comes next.

RESTORE — Restore the Person. Transformation begins with the person: accountability, rehabilitation, healing, identity, purpose, education, and the belief that a life can become more than its worst chapter.

REBUILD — Rebuild the Life. Transformation has to lead somewhere: employment, housing, entrepreneurship, financial stability, family reunification, reentry planning, and the practical tools needed to succeed.

UNITE — Unite the Community. Lasting change takes more than one person. It takes families, communities, businesses, faith groups, service providers, reform organizations, volunteers, advocates, policymakers, and the public working together around people returning home from incarceration.

Person → Life → Community → Safer Society.

What we're building — and where it stands.

New Hope has been developing this vision for years. But many of the programs that will bring that vision to life are still being built—and we believe supporters deserve to know exactly where things stand.

Agent Hope — Prototype built. Preparing for pilot. A connected support system designed to help people prepare for release, navigate reentry, strengthen family and community connections, find resources, build a personalized Hope Plan, and keep moving forward when the process gets difficult. A working prototype has been built. The next step is turning it into a live pilot with real users.

Prisoner Potential — In development. Finding the artists, writers, musicians, creators, and entrepreneurs inside our prisons and giving their talent a way to reach the outside world—creating legitimate economic opportunity, dignity, visibility, and connection.

CONnection Central — In development. A platform designed to help incarcerated people strengthen the network around them while they are still inside—connecting with family, supporters, community members, and others who can become part of a healthier support system before and after release.

The broader New Hope ecosystem — In design and development. Housing, education, employment, entrepreneurship, family support, reentry resources, legal-resource navigation, community partnerships, and additional programs are being developed as part of the larger New Hope model.

We are building this deliberately. We are raising the funding, partnerships, expertise, and infrastructure needed to do it responsibly. Every New Hope program will carry a clear status—from concept, to development, to pilot, to active program—so supporters always know what exists today and what we are working to make real tomorrow.

What we're building — and where it stands.

Our programs are still moving from development toward implementation, so we don't have program outcomes to report yet. We won't pretend that we do. What we can tell you is exactly what we intend to measure.

Fewer people going back. Reentry should be more than release. We are building support designed to give people better tools, stronger connections, and a real path forward after incarceration.

More stable lives after release. Housing, employment, education, financial stability, purpose, and access to resources can make the difference between simply getting out and actually rebuilding a life.

Families strengthened and reunited. Incarceration affects entire families. Our work is intended to strengthen the people coming home and the families and support networks waiting for them.

Stronger, safer communities. Successful reentry means more people building stable, purposeful lives, contributing to their communities, and creating fewer opportunities for future harm.

A system that produces better outcomes. Over time, New Hope aims to demonstrate that restoration, opportunity, accountability, and community support can produce better outcomes for individuals, families, communities, and public safety.

We'll report real numbers as programs go live—recidivism, housing stability, employment, education, family outcomes, participation, and other measurable results. Until then, these are the outcomes we're building toward—and we'll show our work getting there.

New Hope Initiative was founded by Christopher Jordan Johnson, Founder & CEO, while incarcerated in the North Carolina prison system. For more than 13 years, he has developed this vision from inside the very system New Hope seeks to help transform. He didn't learn about these challenges from a report. He lived them, listened to the people around him, studied the failures and possibilities firsthand, and refused to abandon the belief that something better could be built. New Hope grew from that belief.
